MTL Ep 05 - Becoming Fluent in Conflict, the Language of Story

When learning a new language, one must start with an open mind. Through repetition, the student will build a vocabulary and learn the rules of grammar. To become fluent in a new language, one must practice.

We’re not like Neo in the Matrix learning Kung Fu by direct download. Although that might not be too far off. With enough dedication and practice, we become fluent. In this book, we’ll approach mastering the logline and conflict in a similar way.

Mastering the Logline focuses on the story elements. It is crucial to understand how they are used in both the story and the logline.

The information is presented in three levels of complexity: First is “The View From 10,000 Feet”, then we swoop down to the “Bird’s-Eye View”, and finally we’ll land “In The Weeds”.

This expanding repetition will guide the reader towards fluency. There are many entertaining examples to help connect the dots.

A word or two about our jargon. Mastering the Logline offers some new ways of looking at familiar terms, defining them with linguistic precision. Detailed definitions will lead to a deeper understanding.
